Buying a filter before testing your water is like buying medicine before a diagnosis. But home test kits vary enormously in what they actually detect, and some of what people most want to know cannot be tested at the kitchen sink.

On municipal water, you may not need a kit at all

Your municipality already tests continuously and publishes the results annually — chlorine, hardness, turbidity, disinfection by-products, the lot. That report is free, more thorough than any home kit, and produced by a lab.

The one thing it cannot tell you is what happens between the street and your tap. If your home predates the mid-1970s, lead from your own service line or solder is a real possibility and the municipal report will not show it. Many Canadian municipalities offer free lead testing for exactly this reason — ask before buying anything.

On a private well, testing is not optional

Roughly one in ten Canadian households draws from a private well, and nobody tests it but you. Health Canada recommends bacterial testing at least twice a year, and many provincial labs do it free or cheaply.

This is the case where a home kit earns its place — not as a replacement for lab testing, but as a quick check between them, particularly after flooding, heavy rain or any change in taste or clarity.

What home kits do reasonably well

Hardness, chlorine, pH and iron are all straightforward to test with strips, and the answers are good enough to guide a purchase. If strips say your water is hard, it is hard, and you need a softener rather than a filter.

What they do badly

Lead strips exist but are far less reliable than lab analysis, and lead is precisely the contaminant where a false negative matters most. The same applies to arsenic and nitrates. Bacterial kits give a presence-or-absence answer, which is genuinely useful, but they do not identify what organism or how much.

The general rule: use strips to decide whether to investigate, use a lab to decide what to buy.

Testing at the right moment

Test first thing in the morning, before anyone runs a tap. Water that has sat in pipes overnight carries the highest concentration of whatever those pipes are contributing — which is exactly what you want to measure. A sample taken after the tap has been running for five minutes tells you about the municipal supply, not your plumbing.
