Refrigerator filters are model-specific. The part number on your existing cartridge, or in the manual, is the only reliable way to order the right one — brand alone is not enough.

Finding your part number
Three places to look, in order of reliability. The cartridge itself — the number is printed on the body, and you can read it while changing the filter. The manual, or the manufacturer’s support site using your fridge model number. Inside the fridge — many models carry a sticker on the door frame or ceiling of the compartment listing the correct filter.
Do not order on brand and appearance alone. Samsung alone uses several incompatible cartridges that look broadly similar.
Genuine or compatible?
Third-party filters typically cost a third to half as much, and many perform acceptably. Two things to weigh: some manufacturers treat non-genuine filters as grounds for refusing a warranty claim on the water system, and quality varies far more widely than price suggests.
If you go third-party, look for NSF/ANSI 42 certification at minimum, and 53 if lead reduction matters to you. An uncertified filter is making an unverified claim.

How often to change
Six months is the usual manufacturer figure, but capacity matters more than the calendar — a household of five will exhaust a cartridge far sooner than a couple. Slower dispensing, returning chlorine taste, or ice that tastes of the freezer all mean it is overdue.
The indicator light on most fridges is a timer, not a sensor. It counts days, and knows nothing about your water.
