How to choose a water filter in Canada
Start with what’s actually in your water, not with the product.
Most Canadian municipal water is treated and safe to drink. Filtration is usually about taste, chlorine, lead from older plumbing, and sediment — not about making unsafe water safe. If you are on a private well, the picture is different and testing comes first.
Your municipality publishes an annual drinking water quality report. Read it before buying anything. It tells you chlorine levels, hardness and whether lead service lines exist in your area. That single document rules out half the products on the market for you.
The five main types
Pitcher & dispenser
Cheapest entry point. Filters a jug at a time, replaced every couple of months. Good for taste and chlorine, limited beyond that.
Faucet mount
Attaches to your existing tap, no plumbing. Convenient, but slows flow and does not fit every faucet.
Countertop
Sits beside the sink and connects via a diverter. More capacity than a pitcher without cutting into cabinetry.
Under-sink
Hidden in the cabinet with its own dedicated tap. Higher capacity, longer filter life, needs a small install job.
Whole house
Treats water where it enters the building, so every tap and shower runs filtered. The most involved option.
Reverse osmosis
The most thorough household filtration. Wastes some water and removes minerals along with contaminants.
What the certifications mean
Look for NSF/ANSI standards on the box. Standard 42 covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odour. Standard 53 covers health effects including lead and cysts. Standard 58 applies to reverse osmosis systems. A filter advertising “reduces 99% of contaminants” without naming a standard is telling you very little.
Buying in Canada? Filters shipped from US retailers can attract provincial duties, taxes and carrier brokerage fees payable on delivery. Buying from a Canadian-fulfilled seller avoids those charges entirely.
Ongoing cost matters more than the purchase price
A cheap system with expensive cartridges costs more over five years than a pricier one with long-lived filters. Before buying, find the replacement cartridge, check its price and its rated life, then work out the annual cost. That number decides which system is actually cheaper.
