Two households an hour apart in Ontario can have completely different water problems, and neither one is solved by the filter that fixes the other. This is what is actually in the water on each side of that line.

If you are on city water in the GTA

Municipal water in Toronto, Peel and York is treated, tested constantly and published on. It is safe leaving the plant. Two things still reach your tap.

Hardness

Great Lakes water carries a lot of dissolved calcium and magnesium — it has been sitting on limestone. That is what leaves white crust on your kettle, spots on glassware, and a film that stops soap lathering. It is harmless to drink. Some research even suggests dietary benefit from the minerals.

No filter cartridge removes hardness. Not a Brita, not an under-sink carbon block, not a fridge filter. Only a water softener (ion exchange) or reverse osmosis will, and RO only treats water at that one tap. If a product promises to “fix hard water” with a cartridge, that is a claim worth doubting.

Chlorine, and the pipes between the plant and you

Chlorine is deliberately left in the water to keep it safe all the way to your house. It does its job and then makes the water taste like a swimming pool. Any activated carbon filter removes it in seconds — this is the easiest water problem to solve and the cheapest.

Lead is the one that matters more. The city’s water leaves the plant lead-free, but homes built before the mid-1950s in Toronto may still have a lead service line, and lead solder was permitted in plumbing until 1986. If your home predates that, the risk is in your pipes, not the city’s water. Toronto offers a residential lead testing programme, and if you have small children or someone pregnant in the house it is worth doing. If it comes back positive, you need a filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 for lead specifically — chlorine-only filters do nothing for it.

For a typical GTA home

If the only complaint is taste, a pitcher or faucet mount is enough. Do not overbuy.

If the house is pre-1986, choose something NSF 53 lead-certified rather than a basic carbon filter. The price difference is small.

If scale on the kettle is the real irritation, you want a softener, and that is a plumbing job rather than a filter purchase.

If you are on a well

Everything changes. There is no treatment, no monitoring and no one to call when something shifts. Well water is also not static — it changes with the season, with rainfall, and with what happens on neighbouring land.

Spring melt is the annual risk point. Surface water carrying bacteria from fields and septic systems can reach a shallow or poorly sealed well quickly. A well that tested clean in September can be contaminated in April with nothing visibly different about the water.

Testing is free, and most people do not do it

Ontario provides free bacterial testing for private wells through Public Health Ontario. You collect a sample in a bottle from your local public health unit and drop it back. Three times a year is the standard recommendation, and always after spring melt or a heavy rain event.

Chemical testing — nitrate, metals, hardness — is separate and paid, through a private lab. Nitrate is the one worth paying for if you are near cropland or a septic field, because it is invisible, tasteless and genuinely dangerous to infants.

What your well is probably doing

Orange staining in sinks and laundry is iron. Common across much of rural Ontario, unpleasant rather than harmful, and it needs an iron filter or oxidising system — carbon will not touch it.

Rotten egg smell, especially on the hot side, is hydrogen sulphide. If it is only on hot water, the water heater’s anode rod is often the culprit and that is a cheap fix before you buy any filtration.

Grit and cloudiness is sediment, usually worst after the pump cycles or in spring. A sediment pre-filter handles it and protects everything downstream.

Nothing visible at all is not evidence of anything. Bacteria and nitrate are undetectable without a lab test.

No filter on this site makes bacterially unsafe water safe. Sediment and carbon filters remove particles and taste. They do not disinfect. If a test comes back positive for E. coli or total coliforms, boil your water, get the well inspected, and look at UV disinfection or chlorination — not a cartridge.

Winter, and the thing that catches people out

Cold water filters more slowly. Carbon works by contact time, and near-freezing water moving through a cartridge behaves differently from summer water — you will notice a pitcher taking noticeably longer to drain in February.

More seriously, any filter housing in an unheated basement, crawlspace or garage can freeze and crack. A split housing at −25 °C empties your plumbing into the room. If you are installing whole-house filtration, insulate the run or keep it inside the heated envelope.
