Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire and Bosch Fridge Filters

A row of different refrigerator water filter cartridges standing on a light grey surface

Every one of these brands makes several filters that look nearly identical and are not interchangeable. Ordering by brand name is how people end up with a cartridge that will not seat. Order by part number, every time.

Find your part number first

It is printed on the filter already in your fridge. Pull it out and read it — that is faster and more reliable than any lookup chart.

If the filter is missing, check inside the door frame, behind the bottom grille, or in the upper right of the fridge compartment. Failing that, the model number is on a sticker inside the fridge door and the manual is on the manufacturer’s site.

Which part number belongs to which brand

Brand Common part numbers Where it sits
Whirlpool (also Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana) EveryDrop EDR1RXD1 / Filter 1, EDR2RXD1 / Filter 2, EDR3RXD1 / Filter 3, EDR4RXD1 / Filter 4 Inside fridge, upper right, or base grille
GE MWF, MSWF, RPWFE, XWFE, GXRTDR Upper right inside, or behind base grille
Frigidaire (also Electrolux) PureSource EPTWFU01, PurePour FPPWFU01 / PWF-1, WF3CB, ULTRAWF Inside top right, or lower left grille
Bosch (also Siemens, Thermador) UltraClarity BORPLFTR50, BORPLFTR55, 11032531 Inside fridge, upper left or right

OEM or compatible?

Third-party filters cost a third of the OEM price and most work fine. Two honest caveats.

Some newer GE and Bosch fridges use a chipped filter that the appliance authenticates. Compatible versions of RPWFE and XWFE in particular can trigger a persistent error or refuse to dispense. If your filter has a small electronic tag on it, buy OEM.

Check the certification. A filter certified to NSF/ANSI 42 only handles taste and chlorine. If you want lead reduction you need NSF/ANSI 53 stated explicitly. Many cheap compatibles claim one and imply the other.

How often to change it

Every six months, or roughly 750 litres, whichever comes first. The indicator light on the fridge is a timer, not a sensor — it does not know anything about your water.

Run three or four litres through after fitting a new one. The black flecks in the first glass are harmless loose carbon, but they taste unpleasant and they will clog an ice maker.
