Hard Water in Ontario: Signs, Effects and What Actually Helps

Much of southern Ontario sits on limestone, and the water picks up calcium and magnesium on the way through. That is hardness. It is not a health risk — but it is expensive in ways most people never connect back to their water.

How to tell you have it

White crust on the kettle element. Spots on glasses out of the dishwasher. Soap and shampoo that will not lather, so you use more of both. A film on the shower screen that returns days after cleaning. Laundry that feels stiff. Skin that feels tight after a shower.

Individually these are minor annoyances. Together they are the everyday signature of hard water, and most households simply accept them as normal.

What it costs you

Scale builds inside anything that heats water — kettle, dishwasher, washing machine and, most expensively, the hot water tank. A scaled element uses more energy to reach the same temperature, and appliances fail earlier than they should. The cost is real but invisible, spread across higher energy bills and shorter appliance life.

The important distinction: filter or softener?

This trips up almost everyone. A water filter and a water softener do different jobs. A carbon filter removes chlorine, improves taste and can reduce lead. It does essentially nothing about hardness. A softener uses ion exchange to swap calcium and magnesium for sodium, which is what stops the scale.

If your complaint is taste, buy a filter. If it is scale and lather, you need a softener — or a salt-free conditioner, which does not remove minerals but changes their form so they are less likely to deposit.

Testing before spending

Hardness is measured in grains per gallon or milligrams per litre. Your municipality publishes the figure in its annual water report, and inexpensive test strips give a reading in seconds. Knowing the number matters, because softener capacity is specified against it — an undersized unit regenerates constantly and wastes salt.
